Semper K9 is excited to announce the acceptance of Mike into our Service Dogs for Veterans Program. Generously donated by Lynn Michaels, Mike is named in memory of Citadel graduate Captain Michael Francis Ritz, U.S. Army.
Captain Michael Francis Ritz, U.S. Army, had a short, distinguished military career marked by dedication and valor.
Michael was born on February 9, 1955, to a military family in Munich, Germany, and was raised in Petersburg, Virginia. He began his military training at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets from 1973 until his graduation in 1977.
Upon graduation, Michael was commissioned as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. He served in various capacities, demonstrating leadership and commitment to his duties. In addition, he completed the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Advanced Infantry Officers Course, Jungle Warfare School, and Jump Master Training. He also successfully attained his Airborne Wings and Ranger Tab.
In early 1983, Captain Ritz was assigned as the company commander of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During Operation Urgent Fury, the U.S. military intervention in Grenada in October 1983, Captain Ritz led a reconnaissance patrol near Calliste. On October 26, his patrol was ambushed by Cuban forces, resulting in his death at the age of 28. He was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star with “V” device (for Valor), and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions.
At the time of his death, Michael left behind his pregnant wife and his parents. Currently (2025), his son, Michael, is a medical student in Grenada through a meritorious scholarship from the Medical School of Grenada for his father’s sacrifice.
Captain Ritz’s service and sacrifice exemplify the courage and dedication of military personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. He is interred at Fort Bragg Main Post Cemetery in North Carolina.
