At Semper K9 Assistance Dogs, every service dog in training carries a name that holds deep meaning—honoring individuals whose lives were marked by service, dedication, and compassion. Kracken, one of our promising service dogs in training donated to our program by Jennifer Witkowski, proudly honors the memory of Roy Kenneth McCracken, a United States Navy veteran, a beloved community leader, and one of Semper K9’s earliest and most passionate supporters.

Born with a larger-than-life personality, Roy McCracken embodied what it means to be a servant leader. His life was rooted in a deep commitment to supporting his fellow veterans, his family, and his community. As a proud Navy veteran, Roy continued his service beyond his time in uniform. He became a pillar within the veteran community through his leadership as the Post Commander of the American Legion Bicentennial Post 1976 in Annandale, Virginia, for 7 years. Roy dedicated himself to creating a space where veterans could find camaraderie, support, and purpose.

Roy wasn’t just a leader—he was a champion for Semper K9’s mission from the beginning. In fact, he was the first person to host a fundraiser for Semper K9, setting the stage for countless others to follow his example. His belief in our cause and his unwavering support played a critical role in helping us grow, and his passion for veterans never wavered. Whether he was organizing events, advocating for veteran support programs, or simply lending a listening ear, Roy’s heart was always in the right place—with those who served.

Beyond his dedication to veterans, Roy had an undeniable love for life. A die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, he cheered passionately for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins, his loyalty shining as brightly as the black and gold he proudly wore. He was also an American Legion Rider, embracing the open road with the same spirit of adventure and camaraderie that defined his life.

However, perhaps the most beautiful part of Roy’s story is his love for his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His life was filled with the joy of family gatherings and the companionship of his beloved dogs. Roy’s warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
