Jonathan Linden Way’s journey was one of distinction and dedication. Born in New York in 1939, he was a proud graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and later earned a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Business School. His career began with service in the United States Navy, where he navigated the seas as an officer and watch commander. Even as he transitioned into the civilian workforce, he remained deeply committed to his country, serving in the U.S. Navy Reserves while pursuing an exceptional career in the energy sector.
For 37 years, Mr. Way worked at EXXON, where he held key roles in strategic business planning, oil logistics, project management, and maritime operations. His work took him across the globe, from The Netherlands and Germany to Scotland and Saudi Arabia. Among his most remarkable achievements was his leadership in designing, developing, and managing the construction of one of the world’s largest oil tanker fleets for the Saudi Arabian government—a testament to his expertise and impact on the industry.
After retiring, he and his wife, Shirley, settled in Manassas, Virginia, where he continued his lifelong commitment to service. He became a driving force in local government, serving on the Manassas Planning Commission and later being elected to the Manassas City Council. Passionate about economic development, transportation, and land preservation, he worked tirelessly to create a better future for his community. His dedication extended to organizations such as the Manassas Rotary Club, the Military Officers Association of America, and the SCORE Business Consulting Service.
His legacy is one of service, leadership, and advocacy, making the name Jonny a fitting tribute to a life well-lived.
We are deeply grateful to Wayne & Amy Stilwell for their generous donation of Jonny, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Way family for allowing us to honor Jonathan’s legacy in such a meaningful way. His contributions to his country and community will not be forgotten, and through Jonny, his spirit of service will live on. Thank you to Manassas Rotary for contributing towards Jonny’s training.
