At Semper K9, every service dog in training carries a name with deep meaning, reflecting the legacy of remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to service. We’re honored to introduce Hallie, a service dog in training donated by McCain Doodles and named in memory of Hallie May McLarnan—an extraordinary Army nurse, devoted caregiver, and spirited woman whose life story continues to inspire.

Born on October 18, 1915, in St. Augustine, Florida, Hallie May McLarnan’s life was defined by resilience, curiosity, and a passion for helping others. Growing up in St. Augustine, she participated in JROTC during high school, where she not only learned military drills but even trained with weapons, which were stored in lockers during class—a testament to the era’s unique historical context.

Hallie’s JROTC experience laid the foundation for her future as an Army nurse during World War II. When the war broke out, she enlisted and served for the entirety of the conflict, stationed in Spain, where she provided critical care to countless soldiers. Her courage, dedication, and compassion as a nurse left an indelible mark on those she served alongside.

After the war, Hallie returned to Florida, settling in Seminole and continuing her commitment to veterans by working at Bay Pines VA Hospital. She dedicated many years of her life to caring for veterans before retiring, but her nurturing spirit and love for life never waned.

Hallie wasn’t just a nurse; she was a woman of many talents and quirks. A gifted painter and passionate gardener, she embraced creativity in all forms. Despite her petite stature—standing at just 4’10”—Hallie’s personality was larger than life. She had an insatiable curiosity about the world and supported her loved ones’ pursuits with unwavering enthusiasm, especially when it came to their military service, of which she was immensely proud.

A true original, Hallie drove a 1967 Fastback Mustang until her passing in 2012, embodying her adventurous, independent spirit. She always had a dachshund by her side, reflecting her love for canine companions—a connection that makes her name even more meaningful for our service dog in training.

At Semper K9, naming our service dogs is more than a tradition—it’s a tribute. By naming this service dog Hallie, we honor a woman who dedicated her life to service, both on the battlefield and beyond. Hallie May McLarnan’s legacy lives on through the work of her namesake, who will continue her mission of care and support.
