Bea
At Semper K9, every service dog in training carries a name that holds special meaning, representing the values of courage, service, and dedication. Today, we’re proud to introduce Bea, a remarkable service dog in training donated by Maryanne Caruso, named in memory of the legendary actress and trailblazer Bea Arthur—a woman who not only lit up television screens but also served her country with distinction.
Before captivating audiences with her iconic roles in Maude and The Golden Girls, Bea Arthur served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Enlisting under her birth name, Bernice Frankel, she was one of the first women to join the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1943. Rising to the rank of staff sergeant, Bea Arthur served as a typist, truck driver, and dispatcher—roles critical to the war effort at the time.

At Semper K9, we believe names are more than just labels—they’re a tribute. By naming our service dog in training after Bea Arthur, we honor not only her Hollywood achievements but her service to our nation, a story many don’t know.
