At Semper K9 Assistance Dogs, every service dog’s name carries a story of service, community, and dedication. Blue, a Labrador Retriever generously donated by Olivia Damato, was named in honor of the incredible students, faculty, staff, and families of the Jag Blue community within Hoover City Schools in Hoover, Alabama.
The name “Blue” represents more than just school spirit—it symbolizes a united community that came together to support disabled American veterans through Semper K9’s mission. “Jag Blue” refers to the Spain Park High School feeder pattern, which includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and Spain Park High School itself. Throughout the school year, the Jag Blue schools selected Semper K9 as their charity of choice, rallying together to raise funds and awareness in support of service dogs for veterans.
What makes this tribute especially meaningful is the strong military connection found within the Jag Blue community. The fundraising efforts were carried out in honor of the veterans who serve and support students throughout Hoover City Schools each day. Those veterans include:
- Andrew Ellis – U.S. Army, Spain Park High School
- Dr. Pamela Hamilton – U.S. Marine Corps, Spain Park High School
- Charles Lowery – U.S. Army, Spain Park High School
- Millard “Buzz” Williams – U.S. Navy, Spain Park High School
- Matt Jones – U.S. Air Force, Spain Park High School
- Alan Paquette – U.S. Air Force, President of the Hoover City Schools Board of Education
- Rex Blair – U.S. Army, Vice President of the Hoover City Schools Board of Education
These individuals represent a continued commitment to service both in and out of uniform, and the Jag Blue community wanted Blue’s name to honor their sacrifices and dedication.
Blue’s Mission: Carrying Forward a Legacy of Service
Just like the community that inspired his name, Blue is beginning a journey centered around support, compassion, and service to others. As part of Semper K9’s training program, Blue will learn the specialized skills needed to assist a disabled American veteran, including mobility support, PTSD mitigation, public access training, and daily task assistance.
Blue’s journey is a reflection of what can happen when a community comes together with a shared purpose. From classrooms and hallways in Alabama to the future veteran he will one day serve, Blue represents the power of teamwork, generosity, and honoring those who have served our country.
We are incredibly grateful to the entire Jag Blue community, the faculty and staff veterans they chose to honor, and to Olivia Damato for donating Blue to our program. Their support will have a lasting impact for years to come.
Stay tuned for more Pupdates as Blue continues his training and prepares to become a life-changing service dog.
