At Semper K9 Assistance Dogs, every service dog’s name carries a meaningful story rooted in service, leadership, and dedication. Poncho, a handsome Golden Retriever and German Shepherd mix generously donated by Cassie Wood, proudly honors Darryl Patton, a retired United States Marine whose life has been defined by commitment to his country, his family, and his community.

While his name is Darryl Patton, most of his family—including his grandchildren—know him simply as “Poncho.” The nickname was earned during a duck hunting trip in the 1990s after a memorable clothing mishap involving his son and future son-in-law. The name stuck, becoming a symbol of the humor, warmth, and unforgettable personality that made him so beloved by those around him.

Poncho’s story of service began in 1978, when he joined the United States Marine Corps after completing Officer Candidate School. Over the course of his distinguished military career, he served in numerous leadership roles, including as a military instructor at the University of Oklahoma. He also deployed in support of operations in Beirut, Lebanon, and served during Desert Storm. His dedication and leadership eventually led him to retire in 2001 as the Commanding Officer of an Armor Battalion.

But Poncho’s commitment to shaping future generations did not end when he took off the uniform. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he moved his family to Kentucky, where he spent 16 years teaching JROTC and mentoring high school students. He later became the head coach of the boys’ cross country team for nine years and also coached track and field. Under his leadership, his teams earned numerous regional championships and competed in six consecutive Kentucky State Championships.

In 2017, Poncho retired from teaching and coaching, but true to his adventurous spirit, retirement simply marked the beginning of another chapter. Alongside his wife of 43 years, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by successfully thru-hiking the entire Appalachian Trail—a remarkable testament to his endurance, determination, and love of adventure.

We are honored to share Darryl “Poncho” Patton’s story through this incredible service dog. His legacy as a Marine, educator, coach, mentor, outdoorsman, and family man embodies the very values that Semper K9 strives to honor every day.

Through every step of his training, Poncho the service dog will carry forward the spirit of his namesake—serving with loyalty, heart, and determination.
