At Semper K9 Assistance Dogs, every service dog carries a name with purpose. Lance, one of our service dogs in training, honors the memory of a courageous Military Working Dog who faithfully served alongside his handler, David Speiser, during the Vietnam War. While Lance never wore medals or received recognition for his bravery, his loyalty and dedication saved lives—and left an unforgettable impact on the Marine he protected. Lance was donated to our program from Southland Kennels in Stafford, Virginia.
During the Vietnam War, David Speiser served as a military working dog handler in the United States Air Force. His mission was to patrol the perimeter of the air base where he was stationed, searching for signs of enemy movement under the cover of darkness. By his side every step of the way was Lance, his military working dog and trusted partner.

Night after night, Lance relied on his exceptional senses to detect danger long before it could be seen or heard. His instincts and unwavering vigilance provided David with precious moments of warning that could mean the difference between life and death.
When David reflects on his time in Vietnam, he often says simply:
“That dog saved me.”
It is a statement shared by countless military working dog handlers throughout history. These extraordinary dogs served without hesitation, protecting their handlers and fellow service members in some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable.
Approximately 4,000 military working dogs and their handlers served during the Vietnam War. Together, they patrolled perimeters, detected enemy forces, searched for explosives, and protected military installations. Their work is credited with saving thousands of American lives.
Yet when the war ended, the fate of many of these heroic dogs was heartbreaking. Military working dogs were often classified as equipment rather than soldiers. Most were left behind or euthanized, despite the deep bonds they had formed with their handlers. Of the thousands who served, only about 200 military working dogs returned to the United States to retire.
Today, these dogs are finally receiving the recognition they have long deserved as true veterans who faithfully answered every call without question, from organizations like the Military Working Dog Heritage Museum.
